Madrid

Monday, June 23rd: Bull fighting ring "Plaza de Toros" in Madrid (with statue of Dr. Fleming, whose invention saved many torero's lives). Statue of Miguel de Cervantes (with Don Quixote and Sancho Panza), the Royal Palace and the Cathedral (with the throne of the archbishop being removed by a crane):

Valencia

Tuesday, June 24th: Valencia. The prettiest palacio in town (now the ceramics museum), and a poster for the concert tonight:

No pictures from the concert Tuesday evening in Valencia, we were not allowed to use cameras! David Okada may have pictures.

Peniscola

Wednesday, June 25th in Peniscola: Poster for the concert tonight:

View of the castle (where the concert is), from the parent's hotel on the beach:

Concert in the evening. It starts with the band, with Daniel announcing first:

"On the Mall" March by Edwin Goldmann: Only Anup, John, Lauren and Lauren (no picture, sorry) playing, while the rest of the band (and the audience) sing or whistle. Then the band takes the final bow:

Symphony Orchestra playing, and the view of the whole venue (before it got too dark for my camera):

Peniscola concert video

We got video and audio of the concert at Peniscola. It has now been post-processed and uploaded to youtube as a complete playlist. Here are the individual tracks:

Peniscola Day 2

Thursday, June 26th: Walking around Peniscola. Views of the beach from the castle, highlighting the hotels the students stay at, and a few students at the beach in the morning:

View of the harbor and old town from the castle, Calle mayor (Main Street) in the old town, the church there, the Santa Maria gate to the old town, and the Petxina spring and antique wash basin (for laundry or fishing nets).

Barcelona

Friday, June 27th: Arriving in Barcelona in the early afternoon, view of the lower part of the city and the harbor and our group, from the outlook on the way to the Parc Guell:

The bottom of the open plaza (and water collection structure) and two small residences at the Gaudi-designed Parc Guell:

Evening: Open-air Concert in the Parc de la Ciutadella. First a poster seen in town:

The band, Iris' trumpet solo, and Mrs. Hasegawa during "A Wild Rose Above" (the piece honoring her son):

Symphony orchestra and audience from the back:

The same site, seen two days later, without band:

Saturday, June 28th: We started by walking around town. Here is a Gaudi residence in town:

They were kind enough to name a street after our wonderful assistent director, but garbled the spelling of his last name slightly when translating to Catalan. And some of their public spaces seem outright inimical to music:

In the Musical Instrument Museum, the piano used by Isaac Albeniz (the original score of "Navarra" is in a showcase behind):

Poster for the concert tonight, seen while walking around town:

Exterior of the Palau de Musica Catalana, where they will perform this evening. The orginal brick building is behind glass on one side:

Finally, the concert. The glass ceiling, then the first band that played (the community band of the Raval neighborhood in Barcelona):

The band, with Mr. Boitz:

The symphony orchestra, setting up during intermission, then taking a bow after the Sarasate (with soloists):

Sunday, June 29th: All the groups assembling in front of the cathedral, and a few oboe players checking out a local band with traditional instruments:

In the evening, we visited the Gaudi-designed Basilica de la Sagrada Familia. It's design is so mind-bending, it defies our photographic skills. Please google for it.

Zaragoza

Monday, June 30th: Lunch stop in Zaragoza, on the way from Barcelona to San Sebastian: The Basilica of Nuestra Senora de Pilar, then the Catedral de la seo.

San Sebastian / Donostia

Tuesday, July 1st: Walking tour of San Sebastian (called Donostia in Basque): The harbor, the main square (with nice museum in the modern building), and a few views from the inclinded tram tour of the mountain. It was cloudy, rainy, and at times heavy thunderstorms:

Concert in the Kursaal in the evening, the last concert of the trip. The empty stage, set up for the choir, then the local choir, and the band that played before us (I'll look up their name in the program later):

Our band, with Mr. Pwu:

The streamers at the end of "On the Mall":

Finally, the Symphony Orchestra, and some happy people at the final bow:

Wednesday, July 2nd: Walking around town. The Kursaal from outside (still cloudy in the morning), then views from the Castillo de la mota:

Finally, the statue of Jesus that overlooks the city, with lightning rods and a bird nesting on his head:

Burgos

Thursday, July 3rd: On the way back to Madrid, a quick lunch stop in Burgos: The (very large) cathedral, and the city gate:

We left Spain on July 4th.
