New stuff: Spring 2019

Saturday, May 25th 2019: Road vegetation cleanup day, with Nick's chipper (towed behind his tractor, being fed by John and Nick), and Joe's excavator with flail mower (with tree felled onto it).

Not so new stuff: Spring 2018 and Winter 2017

May 5th 2018: Ohlone Community Band concert. Just before opening the concert with "Rushmore" by Alfred Reed: Tony Clements having a sip of water; John on first tuba (leftmost), Yvonne and Jonathan in the percussion section, and Ralph on timpani to start. Photos by Jason.

May 6th: The percussion section of the Ohlone Wind Ensemble after the concert:

2017 Christmas eve: Salem Tuba Holiday

Sunday, November 5th 2017: The game camera at the bottom of the driveway caught a nice picture of a mountain lion. This is a juvenile (lighter and skinnier than the adult female). And then, about a minute later, our neighbor walking his two dogs. For comparison, a bobcat picture from a week earlier.

Monday, October 23rd, and Sunday 29th, 2017: Ohlone Wind Orchestra dress rehearsal, and concert:

Monday, October 16th 2017: The Bear Fire. A large forest fire started in the evening in the Conley Creek canyon right behind our house, and got to within 1/2 mile (3/4 km) of our house. We were officially evacuated, and for a while it looked like our neighborhood would be lost. These pictures are during the night, first two from our house, the third from Nick and Sue's obseration deck at 4am, with the fire dangerously close. The fourth picture is again from our house, where it looks like the sun is rising below the horizon:

Next pictures are in the morning:

By Tuesday evening, the fire was under control, and not worth photographing any more.

Progress on the pump house: The generator was installed in February 2017 (because we were stuck at home for 5 days, and had no power); the link is a video of it running (and powering the house) for the first time. The exterior siding was done in the spring. In July, the interior wiring was done, but no drywall yet. By October the plumbing was mostly done and the blue pressure tanks installed.

Older: Spring and Summer 2017

Europe trip: Saratoga High School's band and orchestra played in Belgium and the Netherlands. First, in Brugge, then in Utrecht at WASBE, and finally in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam:

Sunday, July 2nd: Fixing our road with neighbors Jack and Nick:

June 8th: Graduation, first with the Principal, then with a group of friends (all band, mostly low brass), and then with his 3rd grade math teacher:

Thursday, May 25th: End of year concert of the Jazz bands:

Saturday, March 11th: Jazz cabaret at the high school:

Not so new stuff: Winter 2016-2017

Monday February 20th: We had a heavy storm, winds over 50 mph (80 km/h), and the big douglas fir on the edge of the driveway was trying to pull out of the ground and fall over, causing the ground to heave (this is a video):

Friday, March 3rd: Huerta's Tree Service was here and took it down. The third picture is the last cut; the tree was large enough they sliced it while standing (if it falls, it would damage the pavement):

February: The Saratoga High School soccer team (John in the yellow jersey), and a few pictures of the Thursday 2/2/17 game against Wilcox (John in goal, blue jersey and skull cap)

Thursday, February 16th: The last game of the high school soccer season, against Fremont high: Saratoga won, which gave them the second place in the league. The hug is after the winning goal.

Christmas eve 2016: Salem Tuba Holiday

December 2016: A few high school pictures: Tuba in the symphonic wind ensemble, goalkeeper in the varsity soccer team, and bass trombone in the jazz band.

And a few cute animals seen last week on our driveway:

Not so new stuff: Fall 2015

December 24th 2015: "Tuba Holiday" of the Salem Concert Band (in Salem, Oregon).

December 5th 2015: Christmas concert of the Ohlone bands. First, the Ohlone Community Band, John in tuba, Ralph in percussion and piano. Second, the Ohlone Wind Ensemble, being conducted by a very young lady who won the raffle:

New stuff: Summer 2015

Wednesday, September 9th: 5 acre brush fire (20,000 m²) on Bear Canyon Road, about 3/4 mile (1km) from our house, in the middle of the night. Fortunately, fire fighters were able to control the fire within 1.5 hours. This picture was taken by Les from Las Cumbres:

Sunday, July 26th 2015: In March, a mountain lion was seen four times in a row at the bottom of our driveway. We installed a game camera. After roughly 4,500 pictures of cars, racoons, neighbors, deer (and occasional bobcat and coyote), we finally got two pictures in the evening (click on the small picture to get the full-size version). We also have a collection of mountain lion pictures on a separate web page.

Sunday July 26th and Saturday August 1st 2015: Mid-session and final concerts of Cazadero Music Camp. John was in the concert band both weeks. Video recordings are listed below. Second picture is playing the solo in Maslanka's requiem, the rest are from the final concert:

Fall 2014

Wednesday, December 24th: "Tuba Holiday" of the Salem Concert Band (in Salem, Oregon). John got to stand in front of the ensemble to compare his tuba with an F-Alphorn. A fun concert: see a whole bunch of tuba players laughing during their rests in the last picture.

Saturday, December 6th: Christmas concert of the Ohlone band program. First two pictures of the massed brass ensemble, playing David Lovrien's arrangement of "Adeste Fideles" (first photo by Jasper Gong).

Then the Ohlone College Community Band:

November 5, 2014: Fall concert of the Ohlone College Community Band:

Not so new stuff: Summer 2014

July 27, 2014: First week of Cazadero music camp, the Cazadero Symphony Orchestra: All of them, the tuba player, taking a solo bow, playing some more, and all of them taking a bow. Sound recordings of the Nabucco overture and last movement of Dvorak's 8th symphony are below.

And two sound recordings of the orchestra, first playing Verdi's Overture to Nabucco (which is good for a solo bow from the low brass), then the last movement of Dvorak's 8th Symphony:

Verdi's "Nabucco":
Dvorak's 8th Symphony, last movement:

Saturday, August 02, 2014: Final concert of the Cazadero music camp, high school session. No pictures yet (have to pull them out of the video recording), but the video is online on youtube. John was in the concert band, not in the symphony orchestra for this concert.

Interesting pictures of our house

We live on a ridgeline in the Santa Cruz mountains, at about 2200' = 700m elevation, near the town of Los Gatos, on the edge of the San Francisco Bay Area. Since our house is on a hill, we have a view of the ocean, the mountains, the vineyards, and the Skyline ridge. We can't see Silicon Valley.

Rain in late June! Right before Sunset, so it made a particularly nice rainbow. Click on the image to get a much larger image, or click here for a 1280x1024 pixel image.
